History

Located in New Haven County, Connecticut, Meriden dated back to the 18th century and was originally a part of the neighboring town, Wallingford. In 1727, it was granted its own meetinghouse, and in 1806 it was founded as a town with over 1000 people. In 1867, it was constituted as a city with just under 9000 citizens. Meriden acquired its name from a hamlet located in the West Midlands of England, named Meriden.

The Solomon Goffe House is known as the oldest house still standing and was constructed by Solomon Goffe in 1711 and became a museum in 1986.

19th Century

Meriden became a manufacturing center of distinction in the second half of the 1800s. Various enterprises created or migrated to the city, mostly producing silver, lamps and metalware, glassware, weapons, and musical instruments.
