The community of Bala Cynwyd is located within Lower Merion Township and borders the west edge of Philadelphia. The town was originally separated into Bala and Cynwyd but has since been merged and known as one. The largely residential district has been home to some of the most breathtaking oldest stone mansions that were built in the later 1800s throughout the early 1900s. History
Bala Cynwyd boasts the oldest commercial district in Philly that was established not long after William Penn’s landing in 1682. Some of the earlier constructed structures date back to the beginning of the 19th century and extend out into the center of the town. Bala Avenue is a continuation of the historic town center, with its own specialized business sector that dates back over a century and is noted for its children’s clothing shops, women’s fashion and resale shops, the Bala Theater, and a variety of small eateries.
Schools
The Lower Merion School District, which has its administrative office in Ardmore, serves the residents in Bala Cynwyd. Parents can send their children to either Cynwyd Elementary School, Belmont Hills Elementary School, Bala Cynwyd Middle School, or Lower Merion High School.
Library
The Bala Cynwyd Public Library, which is part of the Lower Merion Library System’s six branches, is housed in a contemporary building on Old Lancaster Road. It has about 221,000 titles in its collection and modern computer facilities, and a special children’s library on the second level.
