Borough History

East Pittsburgh, located in Allegheny County, has one of the smallest populations in all of Pennsylvania, at around 1,800, as stated in the 2010 census. American entrepreneur and engineer George Westinghouse built massive factories in East Pittsburgh to supplied equipment to the great power plants in Niagara Falls that assisted in the transport system to New York.

In 1920, East Pittsburgh’s name made headlines as the location where the first transmission from a pioneering radio system was made. The presentation on the new transmission was featured in 1928 and became known as the television. American inventor, engineer, and pioneer of the television, Vladimir Zworykin, worked for Westinghouse Electric Corporation laboratory where the invention was made.

Demographics

The census of the year 2,000 states there were approximately 2,000 people, 936 households, with 496 families that resided in the borough of East Pittsburgh. Of those estimated 2,000 residents, their racial backgrounds were about 76% White, 20% African American, less than 1% Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino descent.

The median income for a household in the borough is about $21,000, and the median income for a family is a bit more at around $32,000, where male income is slightly higher than female.

Schools in the area consist of East Pittsburgh School District and Turtle Creek School District that merged together in the 1970s. Schools within those districts are Bessemer Avenue Elementary School and East Pittsburgh Junior/Senior High School.
