The adoption agency in West End, Pennsylvania, from Adoptions From The Heart, has kindly sponsored the information in this article on West End, PA.
West End is a neighborhood village located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, originally called Temperanceville. The area is located south of the Ohio River in a relatively small valley less than a mile from downtown Pittsburgh. Temperanceville was established as a dry town in 1874 and annexed to the City of Pittsburgh.
Since its establishment, the neighborhood has grown to include a variety of well-known and appreciated shops such as James Gallery, Ceramiche Tiles, Jacob Evans Kitchen and Bath, Caldwell’s, and Artifacts. The West End Bridge that overpasses the Ohio River keeps both sides of the North Side city connected.
West End Neighborhood
The neighborhood of West End encompasses not only the surrounding area but also the western neighborhoods such as:
- Sheraden
- Windgap
- Esplen
- Ridgemont
- Westwood
- Oakwood
- East Carnegie
- Chartiers City
- Fairywood
- Crafton Heights
Compared to the rest of the city, the West End of Pittsburgh is largely residential, with few industries and a scarcity of commercial districts. The West End Overlook, a tiny hilltop park in the Elliott neighborhood that boasts a magnificent view of the Golden Triangle, is one of the few significant tourist attractions in downtown Pittsburgh.
The southwest neighborhoods of Pittsburgh are primarily residential regions with easy access to the rest of the city and adjacent areas, as well as transportation networks. Over the last three decades, West End has undergone unfortunate demolition, tearing down historic indigenous architecture in order to create housing for more people.
Historic Landmarks
West End is known for three historical landmarks throughout the area.
- The German Church, now known as “Jerusalem Baptist.”
- Carnegie Branch Library built in 1899.
- Old Stone Tavern – the oldest building west of the Alleghenies.
