Borough History

West Mifflin is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. The borough was named after Thomas Mifflin, the 1st Governor of Pennsylvania, who signed the United States Constitution and was also the 1st Quartermaster General of the United States Army.

Striking, West Mifflin has ten land borders, including Lincoln Place, Hays, Munhall, Whitaker, Duquesne, Dravosburg, Jefferson Hills, Pleasant Hills, and Baldwin.

Attractions

Though the borough is known for its majority of residential housing, it is also home to one of the oldest amusement parks in America, called Kennywood Park. The park opened in May of 1899 and was a popular attraction for its trolley park ride.

Since then, the park and moved through a variety of owners and has belonged to Parques Reunidos, an international entertainment company that purchased the amusement park in 2007. Still today, the park offers a variety of 1900s theme structures and rides that have been refurbished for the safety of the guests. It also is one of two amusement parks that is designated as a National Historic Landmark.

School System

West Mifflin offers residents five public schools and four private schools that extend to residents in neighboring boroughs, including Whitaker and Duquesne. Along with the five public schools, there are an additional six elementary schools, four middle schools, two high schools, and 13 preschools.
