The saying goes “it takes a village to raise a child” and that certainly can feel necessary even from the start of the adoption process. But, what if you don’t feel that you have a large support system, supporting you in your adoption journey?

1.      Look Beyond Family Members. While you may lack local family support, it is important to recognize the people in your local vicinity who are going to offer encouragement and support in your adoption process. Do you have local neighbors or friends who are “like family”?

2.      Find Like-Minded Groups. In the internet age, it is easy to find connections on social media who are like-minded about any kind of subject. Joining an adoption support group online (such as the AFTH Facebook Group) can be a great resource to get advice from others. There are also groups such as “Single Mothers by Choice” for women seeking to adopt without partners.

3.      Utilize the Resources in your Agency. Adoptions from the Heart has a regular Waiting Family Support Group that will allow you to connect with other families in the same stage of the adoption process as you. You can share your highs and lows of the adoption process in a safe space.

4.      Expand your Local Resources and Find Diversity! Part of the pre-adoption process involves finding resources for your child. This takes some vulnerability and exploration from the adoptive parents’ side, as you are tasked with finding racial mirrors for your child and finding resources that can help you in your parenting journey. Use this time during the pre-adoption process to visit hobby groups, religious groups, college institutions, or clubs that can become support for you and your growing family.

We know having a support system for raising a child is very important, and this season as you are preparing and waiting is a great time to identify your support. You may also visit www.afth.org to get in contact with our adoption counselors who are also there to help you through.
