Adoption is a lifelong journey that deeply impacts all members of the adoption triad—adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents—in unique ways. At Adoptions From The Heart, we recognize the complexities involved and are committed to providing specialized therapeutic services to support everyone experiencing adoption.

What Is Adoption Therapy?

Adoption therapy is a specialized form of therapy designed to address the specific needs of individuals and families touched by adoption. The goal is to create a supportive and understanding environment where clients can:

  • Explore and process their unique experiences
  • Develop effective coping strategies
  • Strengthen relationships
  • Ultimately thrive in their lives

Common Focus Areas

Adoption therapy can help navigate a range of challenges that may arise at different life stages, including:

  • Identity Exploration: Understanding one’s identity and sense of belonging in the context of adoption.
  • Attachment Issues: Working through attachment and bonding challenges that can occur in adoptive families.
  • Grief and Loss: Addressing feelings of grief related to adoption experiences.
  • Relationship Dynamics: Improving communication and understanding within the adoptive family and beyond.
  • Search and Reunion: Supporting individuals through the emotions and complexities of searching for birth family.
  • Navigating Open Adoption: Helping families manage the dynamics of open adoption.

Who Can Benefit?

Adoption therapy is beneficial for all members of the adoption triad—birth family members, adoptive family members, and adoptees. Whether seeking counseling individually or together, this therapeutic approach is tailored specifically to the unique dynamics of adoption.

The Benefits of Adoption-Competent Therapy

While the benefits of therapy can vary from person to person, adoption-competent therapy often leads to:

  • Validation and Understanding: Feeling heard and understood in a safe space.
  • Emotional Processing and Healing: Working through complex emotions and trauma.
  • Stronger Sense of Identity: Developing a clearer understanding of oneself.
  • Increased Confidence and Self-Esteem: Fostering a positive self-image.
  • Support During Major Life Transitions: Navigating changes such as starting a family or transitioning to adulthood.
  • Improved Communication Skills: Enhancing the ability to express feelings and needs effectively.
  • Healthier Relationships: Building more positive interactions within the family.
  • Guidance in Search and Reunion Processes: Navigating the complexities of connecting with birth families.

Our Services

Adoptions From The Heart is now offering remote individual and family therapy. Currently, we are accepting clients residing in Connecticut, with plans to expand our services to other states in the future. We welcome new patients of all ages who have been impacted by adoption.

Payment Information: Our services are self-pay at this time, as we are not accepting insurance; however, we are in the process of getting approved for Husky.

Taking the First Step

The first step can sometimes be the hardest but is often the most important. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of adoption, we encourage you to reach out and set up a free consultation with one of our adoption-competent therapists. You can also check out our calendar for more events and information sessions. We will be having an educational therapy series on October 16.
