Delaware is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, with a variety of gorgeous natural settings. Brandywine Creek State Park is one of our favorite places to enjoy the great outdoors. Fishing
Anglers can enjoy fishing at Brandywine Creek, which is home to smallmouth bass, crappie, and bluegill. There is also fishing for trout at nearby Wilsons Run. We think fishing is a great way for parents to bond with their kids in a relaxing environment.
Disc Golf
A round of disc golf always makes for some fun, intense competition that the whole family can enjoy. Brandywine features a course of chain baskets attached to poles. The objective is to throw the disc into the basket. Like regular golf, your score for each hole is based on the number of throws it takes to get your disc in the basket. This game is simple but incredibly entertaining and both kids and parents can enjoy competing against each other.
Hiking & Mountain Biking
Brandywine Creek State Park is home to one of the many excellent multi-use hiking and mountain biking trails in Delaware. While these trails vary in difficulty throughout the state, Brandywine Creek’s Northern Delaware Greenway is a relatively easy and family-friendly ride or hike. The 2.5-mile crushed stone trail runs throughout the park and allows you to take in some breathtaking natural scenery while getting in some exercise. The total Northern Delaware Greenway actually runs for over 10 miles and goes through several state and county parks in New Castle County.
Geocaching
Geocaching is a trendy new outdoors activity which is basically an educational treasure hunt. Geocachers hide waterproof containers in public places and calculate their GPS coordinates, then post the coordinates on the internet. Other geocachers then download those coordinates and try to find the container, which usually contains objects to trade, a logbook, and occasionally a camera so the person who finds it can take a picture of themselves.
Picnicking
Picknicking is one of our favorite summer family activities. At Brandywine Creek, you can rent out the large pavilion for events like family reunions and invite up to 80-100 guests. They also offer game rentals with the pavilion. Other facilities include picnic tables with small grills near Hawk Watch Hill, the Amphitheater, and the Thompson’s Bridge parking lot. It’s a great place to enjoy a small and casual family picnic or a larger event with dozens of friends and family members.
