Our Delaware adoption agents think its important for our communities to have play spaces that cater to children of all types of abilities. Children with disabilities deserve parks and playgrounds that are accessible to them, where they can play with all other types of children in the community together. The Can-Do Playground in Delaware’s Alapocas Run State Park is a perfect example of this principle. This Boundless Playground™ is part of a larger movement which has been building inclusive playgrounds throughout the U.S. and Canada for over 20 years. This is the first Boundless Playground in Delaware. Some of the reasons why we love the Can-Do Playground include:
History of the Playground
Open to the public since 2007, the Can-Do Playground’s conception began in 2003. A group of Rotary clubs came together to fill a serious void in Delaware – the lack of accessible playgrounds for the state’s 8,000 children with disabilities. They heard about the popular Boundless Playground™ movement and contracted with them to make this project a reality.
It’s important to make sure that we have facilities for people of all levels of ability, in all aspects of our society. Facilities like the Can-Do Playground do wonders for making sure our neighbors with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else.
Alapocas Run State Park
During your visit to the Can-Do Playground, it’s definitely worth it to explore the rest of Alapocas Run State Park if you have some extra time. This lush green oasis in the heart of Wilmington is one of our favorite parks in the state, with a wide variety of family-friendly activities and events.

Blue Ball Barn
Alfred I. duPont built this barn in 1914, and today the preserved historic structure is one of the most striking features of Alapocas Run State Park. The barn has been renovated with additions of meeting rooms, a large banquet room, and a courtyard for private events.
Collection of Folk Art
The extensive Delaware Folk Art Collection is housed at the Blue Ball Barn. These works explore Delaware’s culture. They also offer interactive touchscreens where you can learn more about the collections, the artists, and the works on display. Currently, there are over 120 works from 50 different artists.
Picknicking
Alapocas Run State Park is one of our favorite places to hold family picnics. Their picnic area is on the east side of the park, just a short walk from the Can-Do Playground. The area has a pavilion and section with picnic tables and grills.
