The town of New Milford is located in Litchfield County, west of Connecticut, near the shores of the Housatonic River. New Milford is 50 miles west of Harford, 77 miles northeast of NYC, 65 miles southwest of Springfield, MA, and 85 miles southeast of Albany.

History

Before and throughout the colonial era, the indigenous Wawyachtonoc tribe resided in the region that is now New Milford. They practiced agriculture and fishing, growing maize, squash, beans, tobacco, and fish in freshwater sites.

Colonial Era

The first Anglo-American settlers were John Noble Sr. and his daughter Sarah Noble in 1707, the previous residence being Westfield, Massachusetts. A few years after, a group of 12 families decided to construct a petition to the Connecticut General Assembly in hopes of granting the establishment of a town on October 17, 1711. The town was created the next year after receiving approval from the legislature.

19th & 20th Century

Many small businesses arrived in town in the second part of the nineteenth century. The Water Witch Hose Company No. 1 and local telephone and power businesses and newspapers were all established. Buttons, paint and polish, hats, woodwork, ceramics, lime, dairy products, and pasteboard were among the products created at the town’s factories.

21st Century

Over the decades, the town has added a variety of recreational areas, attractions, and so much more. They’ve reconstructed the sports fields at Young’s Field in 2006, renovated basketball courts at Williamson Park in 2010, and upgraded Lynn Deming Park in 2017.
