Located northwest of Connecticut, Salisbury is a quaint little town, a part of Litchfield County with a population of about 3,741, as mentioned in the United States Census in 2010.

History

Salisbury was founded in 1741 and had a number of historic residences; however, some have been replaced by bigger contemporary constructions in the late twentieth century. The town of Salisbury is named after the English city of Salisbury in the UK.

According to historian Ed Kirby, indications of iron were discovered at what would become Salisbury in 1728, with John Pell and Ezekiel Ashley discovering the big deposit at Old Hill in 1731. Because of this, Salisbury was the hub of the booming iron industry before the American Revolution up until the 1920s.

Demographics

Information from the United States Census of 2000 shared that there were about 3,977 people, with 1,737 households and 1,042 families that resided in Salisbury. Of the 1,737 households, approximately:

  • 25.5% had children under the age of 18
  • 50.4% were married couples
  • 7.2% had a woman head of household with no man present
  • 40.0% were not related to each other

The area’s population density is about 69.4 people per square mile, and the housing unit’s average density is about 42.0 per square mile. The racial diversity in Salisbury consist of the following:

  • 95.75% White
  • 1.66% African American
  • 0.96% Asian
  • 0.33% Native American
  • 1.53% Hispanic or Latino

Parks & Recreation

Salisbury is known for two different parks and recreational facilities. First is the Appalachian Trail, a hiking trail that extends between Springer Mountain in Georgia all the way through to Mount Katahdin in Main, with about 2,200 miles of hiking trails. It’s known as the longest hiking trail worldwide and has millions of hikers annually.

Mount Riga State Park is a public recreation park that offers tons of hiking, hunting, and fishing for residents and visitors.
