Located within Hartford County, Newington is a town just 8 miles from the capital Hartford. Mill Pond Falls, located in the heart of Newington, is a popular tourist attraction. Every year during the Waterfall Festival in the fall, it is commemorated.
History
Newington history goes back over 375 years; despite the fact that it was not legally constituted as a distinct town until 1871, people from adjacent Wethersfield began settling on the western outskirts of their riverfront town in 1636. Some dubbed the region “West Society” because it was abundant in lumber, which was utilized for pipe staves and barrel-sized vessels required in colonial trade. The terrain was also perfect for herding and grazing livestock due to its expansive meadows. Wethersfield officials gave land gifts to the town’s residents.
At the turn of the nineteenth century, the town began to blossom. Because of its central position in Connecticut, it has attracted a rising number of inhabitants and businesses. Levi Lusk, a veteran of the War of 1812, opened one of the first enterprises on the Turnpike, a tavern that foreshadowed the numerous hotels, bars, stores, and restaurants that would follow.
Modern Era
The most significant apparent indicator of technical development were automobiles which stimulated greater immigration and eliminated many farms. Despite the Great Depression, which halted much commercial activity, Newington’s government leaders aided this transformation by paving dirt roads in the 1930s. In 1937, cars and the bus system supplanted the trolley service.
