AFTH Comments on Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court Ruling

” There are some adoption agencies and attorneys celebrating the Supreme Court’s decision as
they anticipate an increase in the number of pregnant people who will now feel they have no
other option; AFTH is not among them. We strongly believe that body autonomy is a right that
every expecting parent should have and that they should have the right to make these very
personal life-altering decisions without input from the government.

For those who have leaned into the narrative of adoption as an alternative to lack of abortion
access, there is a deafening silence surrounding discussions of the trauma and loss that comes
along with the decision to make an adoption plan as well as the nation’s need to increase
supportive service to those who will feel forced to parent. AFTH takes an unequivocal stance
that the availability of adoption is not a replacement for abortion access and body autonomy.
No one should be forced against their wishes to continue a pregnancy regardless of the damage
to their mental or physical health due to a lack of access to other options earlier in pregnancy.

This is not just about abortion; it’s about the ability to make health choices that are the best
for you and your family. The lack of options leaves the most vulnerable populations in jeopardy
of major health issues and possible death. A few states have already passed Fetal personhood
laws, which consider the rights of a fetus over that of the mother. There are myriad reasons for
procedures that might be considered abortions by insurance companies, such as miscarriage,
health of parent or fetus, discovery of unviable pregnancies, ectopic pregnancies,
rape, and incest etc. may be performed.

We urge everyone in our community to stand up against this dangerous decision. Congress can
act to maintain our constitutional right to an abortion and body autonomy. Call your
congressmen, vote, and support candidates that want to protect these rights.

AFTH is still committed to choice and will provide resources and educate expecting parents
about all their legal options to help them make informed decisions that they alone should be
able to make. “
