Fairhill, PA

The neighborhood of Fairhill is a part of North Philadephia just east of Philly, bordered by Germantown Avenue, Front Street, Allegheny Avenue, and Cumberland Street. The area is home to a majority of Hispanic residents and offers a well-known commercial strip called “El Centro de Oro.” The adjacent communities consist of Glenwood, Hunting Park, West Kensington, Harrowgate, and Hartranft.

History

The Isaac Norris family’s Fair Hill estate was once located in what is now the Fairhill neighborhood. Norris was known as a trader who ultimately became the mayor of Philadelphia in the 1700s. The area began growing its urban distinctiveness as many german immigrants started settling in Fairhill around the 1880s. Fast-forward nearly a century, the urbanized neighborhood underwent more changes as Puerto Ricans, Latinos, and African-Americans began moving into the area, thus creating a more culturally diverse set of residents.

Demographics

The United States Census of 2010 stated that the racial diversity of the area included the following:

  • 80.2% Hispanic
  • 15.1% non-Hispanic Black
  • 2.3% Non-Hispanic White
  • 1.4% Asian
  • 1% all other races

The majority of the residents are Puerto Ricans, although there are also large concentrations of Dominicans, Cubans, Colombians, and Brazilians, as well as other Hispanics, in the area. The neighborhood west of Fifth Street is approximately two-thirds Hispanic, with the remaining black, whereas the neighborhood east of Fifth Street is virtually entirely Hispanic.

Education

The primary school district that accounts for all students in the area is the School District of Philadelphia that includes a K-8 school, Fairhill School, Thomas Alva Edison High School, and the John C. Fareira Skills Center. The Free Library of Philadelphia Lillian Marrero Library provides access to tons of resources for students and residents for further educational resources.
