The suburb of Mt. Lebanon is located within Pittsburgh and acts as its own township in Allegheny County. The township was established in 1912 and provided the majority of agriculture to the community. The name Mount Lebanon is derived from its geographical similarities to the mountain range located in the country of Lebanon, Mount Lebanon.
History
European settlers purchased the land known today as Mt. Lebanon between the years of 1773-1774 from William Penn’s bloodline. Not too long after, the government purchased the land from the settlers. Fast forward back to 1912, the township was incorporated as a “First Class Township” by the Pennsylvania state law and, by 1928, chose to follow the council-manager form of governing.
Historic District
The majority of the township’s land is part of the Mt. Lebanon Historic District and can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the decades, the land has slowly transformed from agricultural farmland to a suburban residential community. Through the transformation still stands 3,341 historic buildings as well as 21 landmarks and sites.
Demographics
The United States Census in 2000 shared that there were an estimated amount of 33,017 individuals, 13,610 households with 9,023 families living in Mount Lebanon. The racial diversity of the township includes:
- 96.21% White
- 0.61% African American or Black
- 0.07% Native American
- 2.29% Asian
- 0.80% Hispanic or Latino
- 0.01% Pacific Islander
The average household income in the year 2000 was about $60,783, and for families, it was slightly higher at about $79,744.
