Museum History
Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museums are four museums owned by the Carnegie Institute, located in the Carnegie Institute complex in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Oakland neighborhood. The Carnegie complex houses the original museums, a recital hall, and a library.
Founded in 1895 by Andrew Carnegie, Carnegie Institute, known today as Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, the building initially held only the library. A year after opening, the first Carnegie International exhibition took place, known as the world’s second-oldest and most prestigious international exhibition of contemporary arts.
In 1904, Andrew Carnegie made his first significant expansion on the grounds of Carnegie Museums’, adding the great Dinosaur Hall and Hall of Architecture.
The second most ambitious period of growth for Carnegie Museums began in 1974 with the opening of the Sarah Scaife Galleries, which gave the ever-growing collections of Carnegie Museum of Art its own elegant location.
