Delaware county aka “Delco,” borders Philadelphia and is considered the 5th most populated county in Pennsylvania.

History

The land where Delaware County lays was first discovered by Henry Hudson in 1609. Several decades later, Swedish, Dutch and English settlers claimed the land from the Lenni-Lenape tribe of American Indians.

King Charles II of England granted William Penn the land where Pennsylvania is situated, which later was broken down into three counties, Bucks, Chester, and Philadelphia. The most accessible riverside area south of Philadelphia was rapidly allocated and occupied. The southeastern part of Chester County was split off from the remainder in 1789 and given the name Delaware County after the Delaware River.

Demographics

Statistics from the 2000 Census shared that there were about 550,864 individuals, 206,320 households, and 139,472 families within the county. The racial diversity was made up of:

    • 24.6% Irish
    • 17.5% Italian
    • 10.1% German
    • 6.7% English
  • 14.5% Black or African American
  • 0.1% Native American
  • 3.3% Asian

Sports

Delaware County is known as the home of women’s professional soccer within the Philadelphia region and the city of Chester is also home to the Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer.

The Delco League is one of the oldest baseball leagues in the country and also originated in Delaware County. The League was once known for offering past and present major league players more money than their own teams would offer them just to be featured by the Delco League.

Ridley Creek State Park is the only state park located within Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Delco does feature a variety of county parks including:
