Historical Background

Over the years, the village has gone through various names such as Gaysville, Glassley, Cocheltown, and Reeseville. It acquired its most recent name in 1877 during a centennial celebration where a Welsh settler shared thoughts on naming this village after Berwyn Hills in Wales.

Berwyn is situated in both Tredyffrin and Easttown Township and is part of Philadelphia’s Main Line suburbs. It has a total area of 1.9 square miles and is made up of land, no bodies of water.

Culture

  • The Footlighters’ Theater, a non-profit organization that has been providing entertainment in Berwyn for over 80 years, is located on the Philadelphia Main Line, and is considered the oldest community theater.

Education

Berwyn is part of the Tredyffrin and Easttown School District that operates four elementary schools, Beaumont and Devon Elementary, and Easttown Township and Hillside Elementary School. The district also has two middle schools and one high school.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia also manages Catholic parish schools in the area.
