Indigenous peoples lived in the area that is now known as Simsbury at the beginning of the 17th century. The Wappinger were one of these groups, consisting of eighteen members grouped more like an alliance than a tribe that resided along the Hudson and Connecticut rivers.
Following an incident involving one of the Wappinger groups, the Massaco, the General Court granted 50 acres of land in 1653 to Lieutenant Aaron Cook, 60 acres to John Bissell, and 50 acres to Thomas Ford. Though the land was granted, settlers did not build permanent residences until the next decade.
Demographics
Information from the census of 2000 shares that there were approximately 23,000 people, 8,000 households, and 6,000 families that all resided in the town, with the numbers continuously rising throughout the years.
As of statistics from 2018, the median household income was around $119,000, with 2.2% of the population being below the poverty line.
