Zoo History
The philanthropist Christopher Lyman Magee contributed $125,000 for the construction of a zoological garden in the Highland Park area of Pittsburgh more than a century ago. The Pittsburgh Zoo opened its gates to the public on June 14, 1898, giving tourists a rare view of animals and plants which they had never seen before.
Since then, the Zoo has expanded itself over the years, introducing naturalistic environments for an extensive range of animals, as well as being a tool for conservation, education, and science.
