On July 13th, we held one of our three Heart-to-Heart events that take place each year. Our Heart-to-Heart virtual events were created to give members of the Adoptions From The Heart community an opportunity to share their stories and experiences. We want to give our community a platform to share their stories, but also give waiting families a chance to hear from families post-placement. Our most recent Heart-to-Heart was centered around extended family members. We had four incredible speakers who were vulnerable enough to share their own experiences about being involved in the adoption process from an outside perspective. The speakers consisted of: a birth grandmother, the partner of someone who placed their child and is now in the process of transitioning from woman to man, an adoptive mother, and a birth mother who both gave their insight about having their extended families’ involvement and what that meant to them. All four unique perspectives made for an extremely insightful event that helped raise money for our programs and services through donations and our 50/50 raffle.
When most people think of an adoption triad, they typically think of the birth parents, the adoptive parents, and the adoptee. While these three components are the main focus of an adoption triad, extended family members are extremely important as well. Extended family members make up a large part of the support system that is crucial to a child’s upbringing. The goal of this Heart-to-Heart was to hear how our AFTH extended family members have participated in open adoption, what they have learned along the way, and what they hope to see for their families in the future!
If you missed our last Heart-to-Heart, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more information coming soon about our next one that will be taking place this coming November 2nd! The topic for this event will be The Complete Triad that will feature two full triads who will be sharing their experiences with us. We hope to see you there!
