Homestead, PA
Located in Allegheny County, Homestead is part of the heart of Pittsburgh, only 7 miles from downtown right across the river. The borough gets its identity from a specific historic moment in time, the Homestead Strike of 1892, one of the most important labor law strikes in United States History.
Homestead borders two other boroughs on the south side of the Monongahela River, Munhall and West Homestead. Across the river, there’s Squirrel Hill South and Swisshelm Park.
History
European settlers arrived on the area where Homestead is now situated around the 1770s along the Monongahela River. Over the next century, that land would soon be purchased by a variety of owners and created into agricultural farmlands, bank owners, entrepreneurs are others that would soon begin constructing a community with the newly purchased land. In 1880, Homestead was chartered and soon after, the creation of the first railroad, an iron mill, and a thriving glass factory will soon be the initial economical grounds of the town.
A few years later, the famous Scottish-American industrialist, Andrew Carnegie purchased the Homestead Steel Works following Henry Clay Frick’s coke works which paved the way to the historic labor crash that affected the entire society.
In July of 1892, the symbolic strike that would forever remain in history would be triggered by the announcement of reduced wages for steelworkers of Homestead Steel Works. This declaration was followed by a strike by the locked-out steelworkers that ended with a broken union throughout the US and helped set the stage for the steel strike in 1919.
