Shofuso is a 17th century-style traditional Japanese house and garden that’s located in Philadelphia, PA. Built-in 1953, the nonprofit historic site was a gift from Japan to US citizens to represent peace and friendship after the war. Today, it brings over 30,000 visitors annually and is a highlight to visit when in Philly.

History Of Shofuso

Shofuso was designed by architect Junzo Yoshimura in 1953 and was built using traditional materials and techniques. It started its journey in New York, as part of the Museum of Modern Art, before making its way to West Fairmount Park in 1958.

Since its relocation to its permanent home, it underwent improvements and additions from Japanese landscape designer Tansai Sano. The garden features a hill and pond with a leveled waterfall, an island and koi fish, a tea garden with a traditional tea house, and a courtyard garden leading to a bathhouse.

In 2007, internationally renowned artist Hiroshi Senju donated 20 spectacular murals that are showcased inside the garden house.

Visit

Shofuso boasts 1.2-acres of Japanese garden designed for guests to discover. In order to explore the grounds, visitors must oblige by their rules. Japanese tradition insists guests must remove their shoes before entering the house. However, in the garden, visitors must keep their shoes on.

The historic garden also provides guests with other activities and forms of entertainment. You can find special programs, classes, festivals, exhibitions, and virtual viewings on a variety of subjects.

If you’re a local or perhaps visiting during April, we recommend attending their largest annual program, the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival. To learn more, visit their website and purchase tickets for your visit.
