History

If we take a step back in time, we’ll learn that the area was given the name “Squirrel Hill” by the original inhabitants, Native Americans that came from the surplus amount of black squirrels that occupied the land. Squirrel Hill’s growth and development were initially focused on the Monongahela River’s riverfront.

Colonel James Burd, a soldier at nearby Fort Pitt, built the first recorded house in 1760 at a place known as Summerset on the Monongahela River. Ambrose Newton built the next house on Squirrel Hill sometime in the 1760s and t his house, along Overlook Drive in what is now Schenley Park, is still standing. The crossroads of Brown’s Hill Road and Beechwood Blvd was the city’s first “business district.”
