History

The area in which Griswold lies was once inhabited by the Mohegan people that resided near the river that was used as a fishing ground. The river brought interested settlers to the area who colonized the area and built corn and saw mills, iron foundries, and a variety of other businesses. The Pachaug and Quinebaug rivers run through Griswold, which is located in New London County’s northeastern corner.

Originally part of the town of Preston, Griswold, located in the northern portion of the town, grew rapidly due to travelers making their way through to attend Preston church services, later causing mass settlement. Eliezer Jewett established numerous mills and an irrigation facility in the late 1700s. As a result of his achievement, the region became known as Jewett City.

Over a century later, Griswold was incorporated and named after their Governor Roger Griswold in 1815.
