History

Middletown is a city found within Middlesex County in Connecticut beside the Connecticut River. Located south of Hartford, Middletown has been part of the boundaries of Hartford County since 1666. The city was incorporated in 1650 by English settlers after its colonization taken from the Mattabeseck Native American tribe. The city was named after the tribe by the General Court in 1646 upon the arrival of the first migrants.

A few years later, in 1653, the name was changed to what it’s called today, Middletown, selected due to its proximity in the middle of Windsor and Saybrook. After settlement, establishing a thriving society was quite hard, from building homes, creating businesses, tending to farms to harvest agriculture, and more.

Middletown became to be Connecticut’s largest and wealthiest colony throughout the 18th century and was very prosperous during the American Revolution. After the American Revolution, Connecticut joined in with northern states to abolish slavery. A slow decline started building during the beginning 19th century that later turned into the War of 1812.

Middletown became a prominent hub for weapons manufacture in the early 1800s. During the War of 1812, many gun factories in the area provided the bulk of firearms to the US government. Manufacturing took over as the core of Middletown’s economy in the mid-nineteenth century, replacing trading. However, as railroad companies avoided Middletown in their building of a line between Hartford and New Haven, industrial expansion was stifled.

Today’s Middletown

Middletown thrives today as a hub for small businesses, arts, and cultural centers as it puts efforts into attracting youth to its downtown area. Along with its significant impact as a governmental administrative center, Middletown continues to give back to its community as a whole.
