West Hartford is part of Hartford County in Connecticut, just west of downtown Hartford. Since the 17th century, the downtown region, informally known as the West Hartford Center, has been the hub of the community and is located on Farmington Avenue and South/North Main Street. The town was incorporated in 1854 and was previously a congregation of Hartford that was founded in 1672.

Historical Background

Archaeological evidence shows that the Wampanoag people used the town of West Hartford as a winter camp, allowing them to hunt and fish along the Connecticut River.

In 1636, Reverend Thomas Hooker led his colony of followers to the land where Hartford, CT, is located and established the name of the land and the Connecticut Colony.

As the colony grew, more land was needed, which initiated the extension of the northern boundary, today name Bloomfield, and the southern boundary named New Britain Avenue. In the 1670s, the area was known as Hartford’s “West Division.” This was the official name until the Connecticut General Assembly changed it to “the Society of West Hartford” in 1806.

Fast forward 100 years, one of the most economic impacts on West Hartford was the creation of automobiles in the 1920s and 1930s. This economic advancement helped the town become more accessible to the middle and working-class citizens that were now able to extend the distance of travel for job opportunities. Because of this, the population between 1910 to 1930 grew exponentially from around 5,00 residents to over 20,000.

The most recent census from 2010 shares that since the early 20th century, the population has grown to over 60,000 people, with 25,000 households and 16,000 families that reside in West Hartford.
