The connections AFTH has made go beyond just people the agency has hired or parents it has helped. There is actually a large amount of overlap between these groups. Many people who collaborate with AFTH frequently are parts of the adoption triad. One prime example is Mary Kiker, a birth mom who placed her daughter through AFTH and frequently works with the agency on different events and classes.

Mary started her relationship with AFTH after she found out she was pregnant at 24 weeks. Mary stated that she felt “scared and overwhelmed,” and had no idea where to turn. She ended up visiting AFTH and meeting district supervisor Amanda Aliberti. Instantly, she felt welcomed and comforted. “There was never any pressure and only judgement free support,” said Mary. She confirmed that in the seven years since she placed her daughter with a family, she has constantly felt supported.

One of the ways AFTH has supported Mary is through the Birth Mom Support Fund. Mary emphasized how without the fund, she would likely be struggling financially. AFTH was able to keep her on her feet during tough times, and she is extremely thankful. Because of how thankful she is, Mary found it important to give back. She makes it a point to speak at events and do outreach work in the hopes that she can help others like AFTH helped her. Fundraisers and spots on AFTHtv episodes are also ways Mary connects with the adoption community. Her favorite form of outreach is classes with potential adoptive parents since it allows her to feel inspired and supported.

“I love that they trust me enough to represent the agency and I am always humbled when I have a chance to share my story,” said Mary.

Mary is also an original member of the Birth Mom Support Group at AFTH. She spoke about how she knows the feeling of being lost, scared or alone when starting the journey of a birth mom. She aims to help and connect with others through the support group.

Mary Kiker is one of AFTH’s most vocal supporters. She is proud to be a birth mom, as well as involved with the agency. AFTH itself and everyone involved in the adoption community is lucky to have her as a part of the team.
