Historical Background

The first people that occupied the land where South Windsor sits were the Podunk Indians in the early 17th century. Thomas Burnham, an English lawyer, and colonist made his way to South Windsor and purchased it from Chief Sachem of the Podunk Indians. A few people from Windsor began utilizing property on the east bank of the Connecticut River for livestock and agricultural purposes about the middle of the 17th century, and a  number of families had settled in the region by the year 1700.

Residents of the community were authorized to construct a distinct town of East Windsor in 1768, but the area had previously been referred to as East Windsor locally. The town encompassed what today are the communities of East Windsor, South Windsor, and Ellington. The town of East Windsor, which included South Windsor, was known for its farming and shipyards and contributed hundreds of volunteers during the American Revolution. Ellington became an independent town in 1786, and South Windsor followed in their footsteps in 1845.
