Delaware County, PA

Bordering Philadelphia, Delco is the fifth-highest populated county in all of Pennsylvania with a population of about 566,747 according to the United States Census of 2010. Established on September 26, 1789, the county is actually part of Chester County, but took its name from the Delaware River.

History

Delaware County is named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, Governor of the adjacent English colony of Virginia, and is located in the Delaware River and Bay drainage basin. The territory was first explored by Henry Hudson in 1609, and it was claimed and colonized by the Swedes, the Dutch, and the English during the next several decades. The Lenni-Lenape tribe were the first inhabitants to live there.

Following the defeat of the Dutch and the determination of the extent of New York, King Charles II of England granted William Penn a charter to start the colony that became known as Pennsylvania. Bucks, Philadelphia, and Chester were the three counties that Penn established in his colony. The most accessible riverfront acreage south of Philadelphia was immediately granted and inhabited. The southeastern part of Chester County was split off from the remainder in 1789 and given the name Delaware County after the Delaware River.
