Spread throughout three townships, Bryn Mawr is just west of Philadelphia and is located in the center of the Main Line. Bryn Mawr is best known as an affluent community full of country estates that belong to some of the wealthiest families in Philly. Though it carries a prestigious name, it has a small population of around 4,000 residents.

History

Bryn Mawr is named after a Welsh estate owned by Rowland Ellis near Dolgellau. He was a Welsh Quaker who fled religious persecution in Dolgellau in 1686 and settled in Pennsylvania. Humphreysville, located in the old Welsh Tract, held its name until 1869 when the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Main Line arrived. After acquiring the 283-acres that now make up Bryn Mawr for the railroad, railroad agent, William H. Wilson renamed the town.

Dr. George Gerhard designed the first hospital on the Main Line, Bryn Mawr Hospital, in 1893. Glenys was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and it is a historic house that dates back to 1859.
