History
Native Americans have lived in the area for thousands of years and were responsible for the earthwork mounds that were created all over the state. In 1896, part of the mound in McKees Rocks was excavated by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and its archaeologists followed the building process and discovered the remains of 33 individuals. While George Washington was president, he considered the area as a possible settlement for Fort Pitt, which today is Point State Park.
The 1909 McKees Rocks Strike was one of the most important labor confrontations of the early twentieth century where 5,000 workers of the Pressed Steel Car Company’s McKees Rocks facility went on strike in 1909, joined by 3,000 more from Butler’s Standard Steel Car Company and others in nearby areas. The population of the city peaked in 1930, and following World War II, there was a population reduction due to the Great Depression, industrialization, and suburbanization.

The United States Census of 2010 shares that there was a population of 6,104 individuals with a population density of 6003.25 people per square mile. Of the 6,104 people, the racial diversity was:

- 0.57% Asian
- 1.65% Hispanic or Latino
The median household income for McKees Rock was about $22,278, and for families, it was only slightly higher at $29,063.

One of the most popular art centers to visit is the Father Ryan Cultural Arts Center that opened in 2008 with about 42,000 square feet worth of space to explore. The multi-million dollar center offers tons of performing arts courses and educational resources for the public to take advantage of. The McKees Rocks Indian Mound, a National Historic Landmark, is located in the “Bottoms” area. During an excavation, the earliest human bones in eastern North America were uncovered there.
