Norwich, CT
Also known as “The Rose of New England,” Norwich is a city within New London County, Connecticut. The city is surrounded by the harbor where the Yantic, Quinebaug, and Shetucket rivers flow through.
History
Founded by settlers John Mason and Jason Fitch in 1659, then called Norwichtown had a plot of land that was purchased and renamed Norwich from the Mohegan Sachem Uncas tribe. A few years later, the Yantic Cove wharf was established in 1668.
By 1694, a public port at the mouth of the Thames River had been established, allowing ships to unload their cargo at the harbor; the area around the harbor is known as the Chelsea district. For decades, Norwich merchants were shipping goods to and from England up until the Stamp Act of 1764 that caused Norwich to separate and become independent.
Parks & Recreational Facilities
Norwich’s largest park is Mohegan Park with several hiking and bicycling paths, picnic tables, grills, rentable pavilions, a beach, basketball courts, a Mohegan memorial, fountain, and playgrounds within the park’s area. The Rose Garden provides gorgeous views with hundreds of different roses all with their own unique scents and shades.
In the center of the park, you can find the Spaulding Pond, Mohegan monument, a dog run, water fountain, and playgrounds.
Museums
One of the most popular museums in the area is the Slater Memorial Museum located on the Norwich Free Academy campus. The museum features exhibits that include North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Vanderpoel Collection of Asian Art, the Paul Zimmerman Collection of African and Oceanic Art, and a collection of nineteenth-century American paintings are all worth seeing.
