Paoli, located in Chester County, is a quaint, welcoming town in between Tredyffrin and Willistown Township, Pennsylvania. Paoli is very rich in history and is known for being one of the first three original counties to be established by William Penn.
History
Dating back to 1769, the town’s creation grew around an inn owned by Joshua Evans that his father passed down after purchasing around 500 acres of land from William Penn in 1719. The inn still remains on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike, close to the Paoli Post Office. Paoli is known for the Battle of Paoli, the Philadlephia Main Line’s construction, and its renowned Philadelphia Folk Festival.
Battle of Paoli
General Charles Grey and approximately 5,000 British soldiers initiated a surprise attack near Paoli on an American campground. The interception of George Washingtons’ orders is what led Grey’s troops to launch the attack on the Americans by sneaking up on them and using only bayonets and swords to strike.
Philadephia Main Line
The Philadelphia Main Line increased mobility, allowing both the Philadlephia and Columbia Railroads to run through it. This allowed the town’s suburbs to grow exponentially, allowing commuters from afar to move into the town.
Philadelphia Folk Festival
Perhaps the most prominent attraction associated with Paoli, “The Homestead” consists of a 15-acre farm that was the original location where the Festival was held annually from 1962 until 1965. During the first few years of its growth, it welcomed over 15,000 people on its spacious grassy fields, shaded hills, and country barn houses.
In those few years, some famed artists that attended and performed were:
- Tom Rush
- Mississippi John Hurt
- Pete Seeger
- The Paul Butterfield Blues Band
- Tom Paxton
- and many more.
Though the town may be small in size, it is definitely robust in historical relevance.
