Located in Philadelphia, Port Richmond is a quaint neighborhood in the River Wards area with a prominent community of Polish, Irish, Italian and German immigrants. A large portion of the community has shortened the name of Port Richmond to just Richmond, but due to confusion of the nearby area also known as just Richmond, its become less used. History
Port Richmond was a working-class area at the turn of the century, and most employees simply strolled to their neighboring businesses with a lunch pail in hand. Vehicles were sparse, and those who did own them kept them in stables. Horse and auto stables may be seen in various sections of the region. Streets were typically clear of parked automobiles, allowing sellers to easily maneuver their horse and wagon along the tiny side streets on a regular basis.
European immigrants arrived in huge numbers, and they wasted little time scrounging and working long hours to save enough money to buy small row houses like those that can be seen today on Chatham Street. The only source of heat in such houses was usually a coal-fired stove in a cramped and small kitchen as they were constructed in the late 1800s. As homes continued to be built in Port Richmond, the sizes began to grow. Newer residences, such as those on Almond Street, for example, grew in size as purchasers’ wealth improved as well.
Growing Community & Culture
Port Richmond is a thriving community with a long and illustrious cultural heritage spanning several centuries. Because of the nature of the existing row house design, where row homes have been converted to use as businesses and stores, some of which are located alongside streets. Many of these shops and bars, on the other hand, serve food, drinks, and charm that is unique to the area.
