History
Ebenezer Lyman, Jr., of Durham, Connecticut, founded Torrington in 1735 and named it after Torrington, Devon, England. Wolcottville was the name given to Torrington’s downtown area after the Connecticut Wolcott family, which produced four governors between 1813 and 1881. The first school, church, store, and tavern were built on the hills west of the Naugatuck River by its early occupants. and the nearby region of Torringford was settled after realizing it provided the best farmlands.
The Naugatuck River’s fast-moving waters were used to generate electricity in the early nineteenth-century industry. When Frederick Wolcott built a woolen mill in 1813, the city’s industrial growth exploded. The mill drew a sizable workforce, generating demand for commodities, services, and housing.
Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Torrington’s expanding industrial plants attracted English, Irish, and German immigrants. Torrington’s population grew from 3,000 to 22,000 people between 1880 and 1920 as a result of increased migration from Europe; the majority of newcomers were Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, and Italians.
