Happy National Adoption Month 2023! The first Voices of Adoption this month aims to highlight some of the professionals that make our adoptions possible! Read along to see what working as adoption lawyers mean to Dorota Gasienica-Kozak, Debbie Spivak, and the team from Building NY Families!

Dorota Gasienica-Kozak

“I love being an adoption attorney… there is nothing quite like the feeling of knowing you’ve helped put a baby in the arms of his/her new parents. Adoption brings the dream of parenthood to life, but the process can feel complicated at times. At KingSpry, we work to manage the complexities of the process to make the journey as seamless as possible so our clients can focus on what matters- becoming a family.”

Debbie Spivak

I became interested in adoption law after a family member went through the process. That was 20 years ago, and I have never looked back. Adoption law is deeply rewarding, providing the otherwise rare opportunity to witness people from varied backgrounds put their own needs aside and come together for the benefit of a child. I appreciate the frequent reinforcement that people are inherently good and share more similarities than differences, especially in these increasingly divisive times. My role in the process is enjoyable, but not without challenge or stress. But, at the end of the day, witnessing children join families where they are cherished and adored, and seeing them as flourish as they grow up, is a joy and a privilege.”

Building NY Families Team

Our adoption law practice brings us joy and feeds our souls. Our clients are adoptive parents, foster parents, kinship guardians and biological mothers. Between the 3 of us, my Associate Attorneys and I are mothers to 7 children and have joined with hundreds of beautiful adoptive families to assist them on their adoption journeys for the past 14 years. We find our work so rewarding helping to free children from the foster system and getting them adopted by their forever families, knowing they will not grow up aging out of a system without family. We are so privileged and blessed to be a part of our clients’ journeys to bring home a new baby and become parents for the first, second and sometimes third time! All three of us have spent years volunteering and working with non-profits which serve families and children. Practicing adoption law was a perfect marriage of our professional and volunteer lives. We love educating pre-adoptive parents, continuing to learn about child advocacy and best of all keeping in touch and watching our client’s children grow. I was once told by a Family Court judge that I am always happy when I come to court. What could be better than practicing as an adoption attorney and spending time with so many wonderful families!”

Thank you to all of the lawyers that aid in the adoption process!
