Educational experiences help children develop their minds and are one of the best ways to bond together as a family. Our Connecticut adoption professionals try to go on at least one educational family field trip every month. The Lutz Children’s Museum in Manchester is one of our favorite places to bring our kids when they want to learn something new. This museum has a variety of programs and events designed just for kids, covering a wide range of subjects. Some of our favorite parts of this museum include:

Oak Grove Nature Center

Located just a short 5-minute drive from the Lutz Children’s Museum, the Oak Grove Nature Center is a 52-acre nature preserve operated by the Town of Manchester and the Lutz Children’s Museum. We always make sure to stop here when we visit the museum, but it can be worth a visit all on its own as well. You can find trails here that are open from dawn until dusk, and we love taking family hikes through the quiet woods of the preserve.

The Nature Center runs a series of 45-minute programs that are appropriate for all ages:

  • The Podunks of Manchester – The Podunks were a Native American tribe that lived in Manchester and walked the trails of the Nature Center 400 years ago. In this program, you can learn about the lifestyle and culture of this tribe and how life in Manchester was different back then.
  • Bird Search – Learn about the many types of birds that can be found at Oak Grove Nature Center, including the sounds they make and where and how they live.
  • Bug Hunt – Walk the trails and search for different types of bugs and get up close with some living bugs from the museum’s collection.

Summer Camp

The Museum runs a series of day camps in the summer, where kids can spend their days in enriching and educational environments while school is out. You have the choice to register for one, two, three, or all six weeks. Camps begin July 10th and run from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM each day.

Some fun activities during these camps include:

  • Art workshops
  • Science lessons
  • Hikes
  • Swimming
  • Animal encounters

Special Events

The Museum regularly holds special educational events which help kids have immersive educational experiences. Some popular events include:

Groundhog Day

Connecticut’s state groundhog calls the Lutz Children’s Museum home. Every Groundhog Day, Connecticut Chuckles IX makes his winter prediction at 6:45 AM while dozens of people anxiously await whether or not spring will come early this year.

Farm Day

Farm Day is an annual event which is being held on September 1 this year. It’s held on the Fish Family Farm in Bolton and includes a variety of fun events for the whole family, including:

  • Animals
