Our Picks For Family Fun In Wilmington, DE
From its numerous annual ethnic festivals to a peaceful walk along the serene Wilmington Riverfront, there’s always something for families to do in Wilmington! In this article, we’ll clue you in to our favorite ways to enjoy a day in Wilmington with your family.
Brandywine Zoo
In our minds, there’s no better way to spend a sunny day than taking a trek through one of America’s world-class zoos. The Brandywine Zoo, located at 1001 North Park Drive in Wilmington’s Brandywine Park, is Delaware’s only sanctuary for animal life.
Ranging over 12 acres and home to more than 150 species of animal, Brandywine Zoo also offers many educational programs for little learners, including a Story Time and Keeper Talk, where kids can meet a professional animal handler and learn in-depth about the animals for whom they care.
For more information on Brandywine’s events, visit the Brandywine Zoo Schedule of Programs & Events.
Delaware Museum of Natural History
If you’ve been reading our family fun guides (follow the links to check out our guides on Best Family Activities in Richmond, VA and Best Family Activities in Cherry Hill, NJ), you’ve probably realized that we’re big fans of museums. Museums give children the opportunity to learn through fun, by interacting with the world around them and figure out how the world works.
In their Permanent Exhibits, the Delaware Museum of Natural History features life-size reconstructions of dinosaurs (MUCH bigger than we usually think of “life-size”!), nature trails, and bird and mammal exhibits. But our favorite spot is the Museum’s “Nature Nook,” an interactive zone where kids can enter animal habitats and learn how they live in the wild!
The Delaware Museum of Natural History is located at 4840 Kennett Pike in Wilmington, DE.
A Day At The Ballpark: Wilmington’s Frawley Stadium
If you have a child who loves baseball, catch a game on Wilmington’s Riverfront at Frawley Stadium! Frawley is home to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, a single A ball club. Tickets are affordable, the ballpark is beautiful, and nothing’s better than spending a night under the stars watching up-and-coming stars run the bases.
Frawley Stadium is located at 801 Shipyard Drive in Wilmington, DE. Remember to bring your glove!
Kalmar Nyckel
For the history buff in your family, check out the Kalmar Nyckel, a working re-creation of the Tall Ship that brought Swedish colonialists to Delaware in 1638.
The Kalmar Nyckel sets sail from numerous harbors on the East Coast, but calls the Lewes Ferry Terminal-Public Pier in Lewes, DE home. On a traditional trip, kids can haul lines, set sails, and enjoy tales from the old salts working the deck! On their special “Pirate Sails,” children can dress up as Black Beard and help raise the Jolly Roger!
To find the Kalmar Nyckel when it next comes to port, visit the Kalmar Nyckel’s Sail / Tour Schedule.
