History

The Woodville Plantation, also known as Neville House, was built in 1785 and has made its mark as an important historical landmark. The estate opened up to the public in the 1970s, after 200 years of residential occupancy of only three families. In 1983, the home was designated as a National Historic Landmark and had been beautifully restored to its original condition.

The first owner John Neville was a Fort Pitt commander and tax collector during the Whiskey Rebellion. He is noted as the most famous occupant of the historic landmark, as he helped wit the development of the local architecture the home boasts.

In 1814, Woodville Plantation sold to Stephen Barlow, a director of the Bank of the United States. Only a month later, it sold again to Christopher Cowan for a couple thousand more.

The last occupant of the home was Mary Ann Wrenshall, daughter of Christopher Cowan, who lived there with her family until 1975. Today, the Plantation remains an iconic attraction in Pittsburgh and a must-see for visitors.
