The holiday season is a joyous time of year to gather with family and celebrate all to be thankful for. However, for members of the adoption triad, the holiday season can be emotionally draining. It is important to be with people who create a feeling of love and foster a sense of belonging. Below you will find advice on how to cope with the emotions that come around the holiday season for those having experienced adoption.

  • Seek Support During The Holiday Season

  • There are many ways to find support that can assist you on an emotional journey. Adoptions From The Heart offers various support groups for adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents. These support groups bring together members of the triad to discuss, share, and offer compassion among their peers with similar experiences. To learn more about specific support groups visit the calendar on our website or contact us at (800) 355-5500. If you are an AFTH client, feel free to contact your social worker for more resources.
  • Do Something That Makes You Happy

  • The holiday season can be hectic. Make sure you are taking time out of your day to do something for yourself. Self-care is important to shield yourself from burnout. Consider going for a walk, seeing a movie, spending time with loved ones, or giving yourself an at-home spa day. This will allow you to be mindful of your feelings while grounding yourself in something that can relieve stressful or chaotic emotions and situations.
  • Feel Your Feelings

  • It is perfectly normal to feel an upswing in emotions around the holiday season. However, it is important to process your emotions in a healthy way. Take time for yourself to process these emotions, but do not let them consume you. Remember to remind yourself that you have made it through everything up to this point, and you are strong enough to keep making it through.
