For September’s BirthParent Workshop, Adoptions From The Heart invited back Life Coach Jenn Oglesbee to help our clients focus on goal setting and setting themselves up for a successful life. Not only as birth parents but as individuals.

In the session, Jenn went in depth about the differences between making a goal and a gift goal. She talked about how goals should be made to connect with how one feels, coming from the inside out and making acts of love to ourselves. Jenn expressed how the typical approach to goal setting typically involves willpower and self-discipline and how shaming ourselves when we do not follow through is not healthy regarding personal life goals. She taught our BirthParents that the way to stop shaming ourselves first is by changing the language we use to connect with our WHY. She gave us these “Tools for Success.”

  1. Focus on Gift Goals
  2. Strength-Based Planning
  3. Life Adjustments
  4. Champions and Sources of Accountability
  5. Getting curious when you are off track or stuck
  6. Partnering with a larger force

Each step of the adoption process is emotional, so it is not uncommon for birth parents to experience stalls or moments of confusion. As an agency, bringing in coaches like Jenn Oglesbee is just one of the many ways we aim to support our clients and families during some of the most trying and emotional moments of their lives. Workshops such as this one, one that provides direction, goal setting, and most importantly, support, are really what’s needed sometimes.

Quotes from Attendees

  1. “Last night’s workshop was so incredibly helpful! I have always been one to shame and belittle myself when I get distracted from a goal, but Jenn’s class really opened my eyes to see that not only are my goals manageable, I can still be kind to myself while on the path to those goals. I learned a new way to plan my goals so they do not seem overwhelming or scary as they once did. That will help me grow as a person in society! The class made me feel confident and empowered. I love the classes! Please keep them coming!” Birthmother, SeAyra

  1. “I find workshops like last night’s class to be inspiring because they make me dig deep within myself and realize I have had the courage all along. These classes help me realize that I can be a birthparent and still have support from these speakers, Amanda, and the girls. I am not on this journey alone” Birthmother, Caitlin
