History

The neighborhood of Nicetown-Tioga is located within North Philadelphia and is comprised of two smaller communities, Nicetown and Tioga. The history of the town dates back to the early 1700s when the primarily rural area of Philadelphia County was purchased by Hans te Neues, a Mennonite immigrant. After his family home was constructed, legend says he christened the house by tossing a bottle of schnaps over it. Unfortunately, the home burned down during the late 18th century.

Between 1700 and 1850, the general Nicetown–Tioga area of Philadelphia County was undeveloped, with communities like Nicetown filling the landscape. It included farms that ranged from small family farms to rural estates owned by gentlemen farmers. During this time, the Nicetown neighborhood, like the rest of North Philadelphia, had periods of rapid industrial expansion. With warfare and economic recessions, the county went through its highs and lows, as did its cultural variety.

During World War II, the industrial sector of Nicetown-Tioga spiraled downward through the 195os and started going back up closer to the end of the 20th century. The area’s capacity to deliver critical services to its citizens was overwhelmed by the massive population change in the 1960s, which included shortages of schools and housing. Nicetown’s deindustrialization resulted in unemployment and poverty, and these issues harmed Nicetown’s public and private lives.

Education

Nicetown-Tioga offers the community the Free Library of Philadelphia, which provides thousands of resources for users. It’s also known as the 13th most extensive public library in America that serves the entire County of Philadelphia.

La Salle University is also located within the town in the small, historic community of Belfield and is a private, Catholic university founded in 1863.
